This is the story of Matteo, an Italian immigrant (though he could just as easily have been German, Spanish, or Portuguese) who finds himself compelled to cross the Atlantic to Brazil in the late 19th century, with no inkling of what lay ahead. There, he would encounter a little of everything: new friendships, unwanted feelings, and romance. Above all, however, Matteo would face immense challenges, soon realizing that the Atlantic crossing was not the end, but rather the beginning of a long and wonderful journey—one filled with adventure, conflict, and hard-won lessons. In his mind, the dream of a better life in the vastness of the New World. In his chest, a heart pounding with anxiety and fear of the unknown. On his shoulders, the weight and responsibility of caring for his entire family. In his eyes, the awe of gazing upon a seemingly infinite sea—a view soon replaced by a new, green continent, with different landscapes, people, and languages.
